Office of National Assessments
What ONA does
313. The role of the Office of National Assessments is to produce analytical assessments of international developments. ONA produces reports, appreciations and assessments on international developments, strategic and economic matters in order to assist the government and Commonwealth agencies in the formation of policy and plans. It also advises on coordination of Commonwealth intelligence activities.
314. ONA bases its assessments on information available to the Australian government from all sources, whether inside or outside the government. It draws on secret intelligence collected by other agencies, as well as diplomatic reporting and open source material including news media and other publications.
315. ONA does not concern itself with domestic developments or situations within Australia. I do not consider it necessary to inspect its activities on a routine basis although I have periodic consultations with and briefings from the Director-General.
316. Further information about ONA can be found on the Office of National Assessments website.
