This table includes all inquiries conducted under section 14 or 15 of the Inspector-General Of Intelligence and Security Act 1986 from the commencement of the Act (6 February, 1987) to 30 June, 1994. Complaints where no inquiry was undertaken are not included in the table. The agency that is the subject of the inquiry is listed under the heading "Inquiries".

Figures shown indicate actual number of staff working in the Office during the six month period. Where fractional amounts are shown, this indicates that a staly member was working in the Ofi'ice for a proportion of the six months. See footnotes for additional information.

  1. The Personal Secretary to the IGIS (now PN 1752) began a period of (various) leave, and was replaced temporarily until August 1990.
  2. One position remained vacant for three months during the period. A stafrehange also occurred during this period.
  3. PN 1752 was permanently filled by a new officer during the period. A temporary SOG B position was filled by an ASIS stair member for two months during this period. This secondment continued into 1991 for one month.
  4. An officer was seconded from the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet for a period of three months and another officer was seconded from ASIO for two and a half months during the period. In addition, another ASIO officer was placed with the Oflice for one month in 1991. A permanent staff member left on promotion in November 1991 and was replaced by a temporary staff member (PN 1751).
  5. A new officer was appointed on a permanent basis to PN 175 1. The agency staff member who was seconded during Jul-Dec 1990 continued to work for the Ofrice for one month during this period. Another officer was seconded from the Department of PM & C for a period of two and a half months.
  6. Two officers (one from PM & C and one from the Attorney-General's Department) were seconded to the office during the period.
  7. In addition to the officer from AG's, two new staff were seconded to the Ofrice, one for four months and one for three months. However none of the secondees were employed in the Ofrice during November and December. The permanent occupant of PN 1752 left on promotion in December 1992.
  8. A new officer was appointed to PN 175 1. The previous occupant of PN 1751 was appointed to PN 1752.
  9. The newly created SOG C position (PN 459) was filled on a temporary basis for two months during the period. PN 459 then remained vacant for one month before being filled by an existing officer on higher duties. This arrangement has continued to this date, leaving vacant the new ASO 5 position which was filled in January 1994.

This Inquiry was difficult because of it's scope and the technical nature of one part of it (superannuation entitlements for female members of ASIO)

The second (darker) shaded area illustrates the period of delay following the date of the Inspector-General's report to the Minister. The Attorney-General accepted the recommendations made in the report 5.6.92, which included a recommendation for compensation. The Finance Minister then rejected the proposal for compensation. Negotiations are continuing to achieve compensation.
