AUSTRALIAN IMAGERY ORGANISATION
IMAGING OF AUSTRALIA253. The office has had regular contact with AIO in the period since it became a separate entity. Most of these contacts have been concerned with the development of an accountability regime consistent with AIO's activities.
254. While AIO's collection priorities are focussed outside Australia, there are occasions when it collects images of Australian territory and Australian entities/ facilities. Such imagery can be used in support of defence and security operations, for law enforcement purposes, where the safety of Australians are at risk, and for disaster management.
255. As the collection of imagery on Australian subjects could intrude upon the privacy of Australians, the office has been closely involved with the Director AIO and his staff in developing guidelines to limit the intrusiveness of AIO's activities.
256. This work has resulted in Interim Rules Governing AIO's Activities in Respect of Australia and Australians (the nationality rules). The Minister for Defence has endorsed the interim nationality rules pending wider consideration of the rules and the other items listed above.
