IGIS Annual Report 1999-00
JURISDICTION
Amendments to the IGIS Act
30. The Parliament passed the amendments to the IGIS Act referred to at paragraph 12 of last year's annual report.
Update of ASIO's powers
31. The Parliament agreed to update ASIO's powers to enable it to access information from computers, to obtain and execute warrants to use tracking devices and to obtain information from the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC) and the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).
32. The exercise of these powers is subject to inspection by the Inspector-General. In the case of AUSTRAC, the inspections will be carried out in accordance with a memorandum of understanding between AUSTRAC and the Inspector-General.
Administration
33. As in past years the Secretary to the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, Mr Moore?Wilton, and his staff provided accommodation and some administrative support, without which it would be very difficult for an office of this size to function effectively, and for which I am very grateful.
34. DSD provided a substantial upgrade for the office's secure computer network and I wish to express my thanks to the Director, DSD and his staff for their assistance in this regard.
35. Thanks are also due to the Commonwealth and Defence Force Ombudsman, Mr Ron McLeod AM, who acted for me on occasions when I was absent from duty.
