IGIS Reconciliation Action Plan

In June the IGIS launched its first Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). Our Reflect RAP is an important step as the IGIS grows, and is the cornerstone of the IGIS’s commitment to reconciliation. The RAP is more than words on paper; it represents the IGIS’s commitment to action.

Through the RAP, the IGIS is building cultural capability to ensure our workplace is safe and welcoming for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. While the IGIS is small and specialised, it is vital there are no barriers to having the best people doing the important work of our office. That includes removing barriers due to a lack of cultural understanding or to prejudice, whether conscious or unconscious.

Implementation of the RAP is underway and the IGIS will continue to work with Reconciliation Australia, our APS colleagues, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, including the traditional owners of the land on which we work, as we continue our reconciliation journey.

The RAP was launched internally at an all-staff event on 4 June 2025. Since the launch, the RAP Working Group has engaged with internal and external stakeholders and achieved a number of the planned action items. A summary of actions taken so far is provided below.

  • The IGIS’s commitment to reconciliation was communicated to staff at a RAP launch event, where senior staff explained its significance for the agency and celebrated the achievement.
  • A RAP Champion has been appointed (the Deputy IGIS).
  • A Reconciliation Officer has been appointed to coordinate the implementation of the RAP.
  • A RAP Working Group has been established, consisting of the RAP Champion, Reconciliation Officer, Diversity and Inclusion Committee Chair, and Human Resources representative.
  • The RAP has been uploaded to the IGIS website.
  • Reporting mechanisms have been put in place; the Reconciliation Officer will report to senior leadership and at all-staff meetings at agreed times to report progress.
  • Research has been conducted into relevant matters to consider when reviewing policies impacting race relations and anti-discrimination practices.
  • A review has been conducted of Human Resources policies to:
    • identify opportunities to articulate, support and recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in our workforce.
    • Identify existing anti-discrimination provisions and required future needs.
  • Resources were shared during NAIDOC week to inform staff of its meaning and how they could be involved in events.
  • Finance policies have been reviewed and confirmed to contain provisions relating to consideration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses in procurement decisions.

Recent Inquiry and Preliminary Inquiry Reports

The Office is unable to publish the full text of Inquiry, Preliminary Inquiry and Inspection reports it prepares due to security classification and operational sensitivities, instead it provides a non-classified summary of those activities in its Annual Report. However, where it is able to do so it will publish full reports to enhance transparency of its activities and the findings and recommendations.
